My
Qualifications
BSc. (Honours) Herbal Medicine University of Wales
B.A. (Honours) Law Durham University
Master of Business Administration Newcastle University
My Background
Having gained a degree in Law from Durham University, I worked in
industry for over 20 years - mainly in the pharmaceutical industry.
My career was in senior
management roles in both customer service
and later in purchasing in a multinational company environment.
When
my son was born I took the opportunity to develop my deep interest
in herbal medicine, and became a professionally qualified medical
herbalist in 2004.
I also edit and produce a quarterly newsletter for healthcare professionals and professional therapists –called ‘Greenfiles’ – which reports research news, abstracts of trials and articles of interest especially in the field of herbal medicine and nutrition. This is now available on-line and is popular world-wide.
To complement my herbal medicinework, I am now undertaking an MSc degree in Nutrition which I believe will provide even more benefits for those who come to see me. Because food and diet have such a powerful influence on our health, understanding more about our nutrition, and being able to assess and advise on an individual’s dietary needs, can only be for the good.
Training as a Medical Herbalist
The course involved studying medical sciences at degree level, including
subjects such as biochemistry, pharmacology, anatomy & physiology,
pathology and, of course, orthodox medicine and diagnostic skills.
A significant and important element of the course was the in-depth
study of herbs and how individual herbs work within the body. The
degree also required me to undertake and complete 500 hours of training
at one of the herbal medicine training clinics in London, Leeds
and Edinburgh. This involved treating patients, under the supervision
of a qualified herbalist, with a very wide range of illnesses, from
cardiovascular diseases to autoimmune diseases, from digestive problems
to skin problems.
Seeing and treating patients within the training clinics built
a broad experience and understanding of how herbs can help many
conditions and improve quality of life for many people.
My Practise
I work as a medical herbalist at 2 clinics:
My clinic is in Alnwick on Thursday and Friday in the afternoon and early evening. I also have appointments available on some Saturday mornings.
